Semiconductor Device Transfer

Semiconductor Pick-and-Place Handler Equipment

A semiconductor pick-and-place handler actively transfers packaged devices between supported input media, orientation or vision stations, process positions and configured outputs. The architecture provides controlled pickup and placement; the installed tooling and workstations determine which packages and operations a particular machine can support.

Handling Architecture

What Makes It a Pick-and-Place Handler?

The machine takes control of the device rather than allowing it to travel only by gravity or a continuous track. It receives a package at a known presentation point, picks it up, places it at the required station and retrieves it for the configured output route.

01

Active Package Pickup

A vacuum nozzle, gripper or another installed head lifts the package from a tray, feeder presentation point, carrier or supported input position. The pickup surface, device weight and package fragility determine the suitable tool.

02

Repeatable Placement

The motion system places the device at a socket, nest, camera position, inspection point or other defined station. Vision and alignment functions may be used when the installed process requires tighter positional control.

03

Configured Output Routing

After the installed operation is complete, the machine retrieves the package and returns it to the assigned tray, tube, carrier, grade, reject location or downstream station.

Device Route

Follow the Package Through the Machine

The sequence changes with the installed modules, but the device route normally moves from input presentation to identification, pickup, controlled placement, the required process and a defined output destination.

01

Present

Feed the package from a tray, tube system, carrier or another supported input module.

02

Identify

Confirm presence, position, orientation or traceability data when the machine is equipped to do so.

03

Pick

Lift the device with the installed nozzle, gripper or package-specific handling head.

04

Place

Position the device at a nest, socket, camera point or other process station.

05

Process

Complete the installed inspection, orientation, test, marking or other operation.

06

Route

Retrieve the package and send it to the assigned output, grade or reject destination.

The installed modules may combine, omit or reorder these stages. Vision, thermal conditioning, electrical test, inspection, marking and output options should be confirmed on the individual machine.
Architecture Fit

When Active Pick-and-Place Motion Is Useful

The right architecture is determined by how the package must be moved and presented. Pick-and-place becomes valuable when the machine needs direct control over pickup, orientation, placement or routing between stations.

01

The Package Cannot Rely on Gravity Transfer

Fragile, irregular, orientation-sensitive or carrier-based devices may not move reliably through a simple track. Active handling allows the package to be lifted and placed without depending on free sliding.

02

The Device Must Enter a Defined Position

Sockets, nests, vision stations and inspection points may require controlled alignment, placement height, insertion direction or force that a passive route cannot provide.

03

The Route Includes Several Media or Stations

Pick-and-place motion can transfer packages between trays, feeder presentation points, process stations and different output destinations when a single continuous track is unsuitable.

04

The Product Mix Requires Conversion Flexibility

Replaceable heads, nests, trays, recipes and station tooling may support several device families, provided the required conversion hardware and machine range are available.

Machine Configuration

Compare What Is Installed, Not Only the Model Name

Machines from the same platform family can be prepared for different packages and production routes. The available hardware, software and conversion parts define what a specific unit can actually do.

Configuration Area What Should Be Confirmed
Input Presentation

Tray loader, tube feeder, carrier, bowl or manual presentation; orientation method; capacity; sensors and included change parts.

Package Tooling

Device kit, nests, guides, trays, tubes, carriers and package-specific parts matched to the target device drawing.

Pickup Head

Vacuum nozzle, gripper, number of heads, pickup surface, placement method, force control and package-contact condition.

Vision and Alignment

Presence detection, orientation, centering, code reading, cameras, lighting, calibration and available software recipes.

Installed Stations

Inspection, test, thermal conditioning, orientation, marking, sorting or other operations installed on the machine.

Output Routing

Tray, tube, carrier, bin or reject output; number of destinations; orientation and any grade or process routing.

Controls and Accessories

Software version, communication interfaces, licenses, manuals, backups, spare parts and supplied conversion items.

Specialist Buying Paths

Use the Page That Matches the Next Decision

Move to the test-application page when sockets, tester communication, temperature and effective test output are the main concerns. Use the used-equipment page when machine condition and the supplied configuration must be verified.

Application Information

Start with the Package and Required Device Route

A model number alone cannot establish compatibility. These details help determine whether an available machine already has the required media modules, handling tools and process stations.

Buyer Questions

Pick-and-Place Handler FAQ

These answers clarify the machine architecture, package compatibility and the configuration information needed before equipment selection.

What does a semiconductor pick-and-place handler do?

It actively picks up a packaged semiconductor device, places it at one or more defined stations and routes it to the required output after the installed operation is complete.

Is it the same as an SMT pick-and-place machine?

No. A semiconductor handler moves packaged devices through back-end handling, inspection, sorting or test processes. An SMT placement machine mounts electronic components onto printed circuit boards.

Does every pick-and-place handler include electrical test?

No. Electrical test requires installed test sites, sockets or contactors, interface hardware, tester communication and compatible software. These functions must be confirmed on the individual machine.

Which semiconductor packages can the machine handle?

Compatibility depends on package dimensions, weight, pickup surface, input media, handling head, device kit and available conversion hardware. The platform family alone does not confirm package support.

Can one handler support both trays and tubes?

Some platforms can be configured for several media types, but the required loaders, presentation mechanisms, output modules and change parts may be optional. Confirm what is installed and supplied.

What information is needed to recommend a handler?

Provide the package drawing, input and output media, required stations, production target, existing tooling, facility conditions and project timing.

Match the Handler to the Package and Device Route

Send the package, media format, required stations, output method and production target so the available machines can be compared by installed configuration.
